Members of the Union of Cuban Journalists, in Guantánamo, arrived at the Vega del Jobo settlement, located in the Nipe-Sagua-Baracoa mountain range, about thirty kilometers from the main town of the Imías municipality, to exchange there with its residents, on the occasion of the day dedicated to the Cuban Press Day that is celebrated every year on March 14.

This place of impressive beauty, the first stop of journalists was at the home of Antonio Pineda Laffita, an agricultural engineer, who lives and preserves his grandfather’s property, where José Martí and other independence heroes camped on the second day after their return to Cuba in April 1895 to join the resumption of the struggle for independence.

The reporters also learned of the existence of a natural gas source, discovered by the young Alejandro González Utria, a native of Alto del Jobo, who has been using this fossil gas for three years to cook his food.

González, a lover of electronics, told that the gas is found in other nearby farms, and according to the experts from the national company Cupet who visited the place, it is not toxic and research continues for its greater use in the area.

The production of cocoa, coffee, and various vegetable crops are among the main economic activities of Vega del Jobo, the largest popular council in the Sierra del Purial, in the municipality of Imías, with nearly 1,300 residents who also benefit from vital services, photovoltaic panels, and crystal-clear water sources.

Contemplating the beauty of these places, the Apostle of Cuban independence, while traveling along the Jojó River with his comrades in armed uprising 130 years ago, was inspired to say: ” The little streams of the mountains, Please me more than the sea
