Guantanamo.- With the supply of about 20 tons of plant mass to entities of the Ministry of Public Health, the production of medicinal plants in the Guantánamo Province was overfulfilled by 103 percent during the first half of the current year.
Céspedes Lobaina Arias, subdelegate of various crops in the territorial delegation of agriculture, reported that to fulfill the annual plan they are working on 52.4 hectares, and the projection in 2024 is to grow by 8.6 hectares in the municipalities Guantánamo, Yateras and San Antonio del Sur.
The manager explained that for this they have six state farms, where they boost the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants such as lemon grass, oregano, ginger and turmeric as they are the most in demand.
He also highlighted that work is being done on the recovery of the plant mass of passionflower, mint lemon balm and peppermint in two cultivation houses, with the purpose of increasing the production of phyto and apipharmaceuticals.
It is also intended to plant wild species such as bija, macaw, indigo, majagua and sage to bring these productions closer together and reduce unnecessary fuel costs.
With the exception of garlic and onion, the Agriculture system in Guantánamo guarantees the demand of the Ministry of Public Health in relation to the 42 species of medicinal plants, included in the basic schedule of medications.
