Railway workers in this central Cuban province are working today to reestablish the island’s main railway where the derailment of the extra 900 train carrying oil for the Sergio Soto Refinery in Cabaiguán occurred.

According to a press release from the Railroads Company, the accident happened on Saturday at kilometer 364.2, near the town of Siguaney, in the municipality of Taguasco, causing damage to the track and fuel tanks, although no damage to personnel is being reported; while the oil is currently being recovered.

Passenger trains running on that railway were temporarily diverted, increasing travel time by roughly 40 minutes.

Railroad executives, Communist Party, Government and Ministry of the Interior officials from Sancti Spiritus immediately rushed to the site of the accident and are supervising the works to restore the main railway.

To determine the causes and circumstances that caused the derailment, an emergency protocol was activated and an investigative commission was set up.
