Guantánamo – Almost 20 days after Hurricane Oscar passed through the eastern territory, most of the damaged educational institutions have been refurbished, thanks to the unconditional support of brigades belonging to the Ministry of Construction, as well as the Revolutionary Armed Forces, in addition to the work carried out by teachers, cadres and the support of families.

Raquel Laviste Villafruela, general director of Education in Guantánamo, reported that only 17 centers have not been recovered yet, which are located in the towns of Maisí, Baracoa and Imías, out of a total of 185 that were affected during the passage of the meteorological phenomenon.

She said that these days the construction brigades of the educational sector are working quickly to repair and place roofs, covers, as well as to fix sports areas, perimeter fences, and to repair walls damaged by strong winds, among other actions.

She reported that the classrooms that did not open their doors are now operating in family homes and teachers’ homes to prevent the educational process from being delayed in those four territories, the most affected by Hurricane Oscar.

Guantanamo has a school network of 887 schools spread across ten municipalities, of which 185 were severely hit by Hurricane Oscar, in which roofs and walls were severely damaged. The work is currently being done to refurbish some 23 centers, which are now in better condition than before.
