Guantanamo.- The recovery of 303 homes, of the 1,702 that were affected by Hurricane Oscar, attests to the work of the collective led by Yamilé Navarro Urtate, president of the Playa Turey People’s Council in Baracoa.
Navarro Urtate reported that they still have 1,399 homes damaged by the weather phenomenon that hit the municipality in October 2024 to be repaired, including nine total collapses.
In addition to this, there are 252 temporary facilities that housed families affected by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and lost their roofs again.
In evaluating the program’s progress in her district, the director assessed the recovery of homes as minimal due to the limited inflow of resources into the territory, which is more noticeable so far in 2025.
She explained that the distribution of material resources is supported by social workers in each district of the government district, who are familiar with the people in vulnerable situations, and who are prioritized in this process.
Donations are also being made, such as household appliances, blankets, clothing, water storage containers, sanitation kits, mattresses, rain boots, bedspreads, sheets, pillowcases, and pillows, among others.
The president of the Playa-Turey People’s Council of Baracoa added that she is working together with community stakeholders while directly addressing the concerns of her constituents to organize the recovery process for homes affected by Oscar.
