Guantánamo – Of the 188 educational institutions in the Guantánamo Province affected by the hit of Hurricane Oscar in its passage through this eastern region, 63 have been already recovered, Raquel Laviste Villafruela, General Director of Education, announced to CMKS Radio Station.

She also reported that the largest number of affected centers belong to the municipalities of Baracoa and Maisí with 167 facilities, which suffered damage to lightweight and flat roofs, carpentry, as well as broken walls due to the felling of trees and the contamination of water from cisterns.

The highest authority of the sector in Guantánamo also stated that in the coastal municipalities affected by Oscar, they are still quantifying the loss of furniture and school materials, while working in close collaboration with health personnel to ensure that schools could restart the course with appropriate sanitary conditions.

Laviste Villafruela also said that work is being done intensively to repair the rest of the damaged schools in Imias and San Antonio del Sur affected by the atmospheric phenomenon and indicated that the province has the essential resources to repair the damage.

Given this situation in Guantánamo, the educational system will not restart until further notice, given the actions to recover the schools damaged after the passage of the Oscar hydrometeorological event and the refurbishment of the of the schools used as evacuation centers.
