Guantánamo.- Seven delegates from Guantánamo were elected to the new National Council of Cuba’s Central Workers’ Union (CTC) during the organization’s Congress, which reaffirmed the trade union movement’s role in food production, social discipline, and the fight against crime and corruption.

Juana Eglis Fernández Louit, general secretary of the CTC in Guantánamo, described the Congress as a historic and significant event held amid the country’s complex economic situation, highlighting the labor movement’s responsibility to support the economic and social transformations underway.

For the first time, the Congress combined virtual sessions with in-person participation by members of the newly elected National Council, allowing delegates from all provinces to take part simultaneously.

In Guantánamo, 35 representatives participated via videoconference from the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party, while a delegation of seven attended the sessions in Havana.

According to Fernández Louit, delegates approved the central report, reviewed the organization’s financial performance, elected the new National Council, and discussed implementation of the country’s economic and social development program through 2026.

The agenda also included the role of workers in national defense, government management, and strengthening community-based initiatives.

She stressed the importance of the government’s 176 economic measures, noting that they require better training for union leaders and greater worker participation in both their implementation and oversight.

Fernández Louit emphasized that workers’ assemblies remain the union’s primary forum for addressing concerns raised at the grassroots level.

The Congress was attended by Cuba’s top leadership, including Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic; Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa; and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, who exchanged views with delegates on the union movement’s contribution to the country’s economic and social development.
