With three medals, the Guantanamo athletes closed their performance at the Seventh Parapan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023, thus ending their contribution to the twelve titles, eight subtitles and 15 bronzes of the Cuban delegation, to end in the seventh place in the competition.
The other two participants, the weightlifter Yaimé Bongo Medina and the experienced thrower Noralvis De las Heras Chivás, placed in the first five places in their respective competitions.
Omara Durand´s unusual disqualification, for letting go of her guide a few meters from the finish line in the final of the 400 meters (m) for the visually impaired, did not allow the purpose of equaling or surpassing that performance to be achieved.
Brazil (148-91-89) dominated the competition by countries with a notable difference in the amount of gold metals with respect to its closest pursuer, in second place, the United States (52-54-50) and Colombia (46 -55-50) in third. Mexico (29-46-49), Argentina (24-32-50) and Chile (14-20-14) were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
