Guantánamo.- The State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC) has launched a fundraising campaign for the Caribbean island to provide aid following Hurricane Melissa.According to the MESC, which published an appeal on the Cubainformación website, the devastation caused by the cyclone in Cuba’s eastern provinces requires solidarity support from Spain.
To this end, the MESC stated, several accounts have been opened, all with the same objective of supporting humanitarian aid “for a people who are also suffering from the genocidal policy of economic blockade imposed by the United States government.”
So far, the accounts accepting donations are located in Valencia, Madrid, Malaga, Andalusia, Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Granada.
In this vein, Medicuba Spain and SODePAZ launched a campaign to collect donations for Cuba. As a preliminary effort, the two organizations have already prepared a container with galvanized roofing sheets, which will arrive in Santiago de Cuba on November 6th.
They are also finalizing the shipment of four more containers in November with aid to alleviate the damage caused by the devastating Hurricane Melissa on Cuba.
The aid includes medical and educational supplies, work clothes, construction materials, photovoltaic equipment, 40 hospital beds (donated by Sierrallana and Laredo hospitals), 2.4 million syringes with needles, and two million hypodermic needles, for a total value of half a million euros.
According to sources, the first container, carrying 2,4 million syringes with needles and 110,000 hypodermic needles, departed from the port of Valencia on Saturday, November 1st.
