Guantanamo.- Overflown rivers, damaged homes and infrastructure, fallen trees reveal the huge damage, not yet totally assessed, caused by tropical storm Oscar, which made landfall as a cat 1 hurricane near the Baracoa city in the easternmost Cuban province of Guantanamo.

Intense rains from Oscar during nearly 25 hours affecting the territory caused flooding in the popular sea-front drive of the city and in several streets.

Over 300 millimeters of rainwater were reported in local areas like Valle de Caujeri, San Antonio del Sur and others, said the head of the Provincial Weather Center Andres Aragon.

Oscar is expected to move north but still pouring heavy rains in the east of Cuba. Landslides caused by the rains have blocked main roads connecting Baracoa.

Several teams of electrical workers from other provinces will help repair damaged grids in Guantanamo, authorities said
