Syrians and Cubans on Monday celebrated the 70th anniversary of the attacks on on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks during the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958).

Those attending the commemoration at the Cuba Embassy highlighted the historical importance of that revolutionary action, and ratified the spirit of solidarity, struggle, sovereignty and mutual support that unite Syria and Cuba.

During the ceremony, Cuban Acting Chargé d’Affaires Emilio Pevida pointed out that these actions, taken by Fidel Castro and his comrades on July 26, 1953, paved the way to the armed struggle that did not stop until the total overthrow of the pro-imperialist tyranny in 1959.

He added that the attackers, inspired by Jose Marti’s ideas and thoughts, intended to realize the most important aspirations of socioeconomic and political transformation of the country’s situation of that time.

Under that same spirit of struggle and rebellion of the July 26 fighters, the Cuban people continue to wage their battle against US imperialism, which maintains its aggressive policy against Cuba by enforcing an increasingly suffocating economic, commercial and financial blockade and creating constant campaigns against the Cuban Revolution to destroy it, the Cuban diplomat pointed out.
