Guantanamo.- The Babul Folkloric Ballet of Guantánamo opened its 31st anniversary season this week, celebrating another anniversary of the company’s founding and the richness of the Caribbean’s cultural heritage.

Under the title “Years,” the program of the celebration highlights the region’s traditional dance, song, and music, and combines workshops, exchanges, and public performances of diverse styles.

The event began with classes on Anglophone Caribbean dances at the Rubén López Sabariego House of Culture, where participants explored rhythms from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados, among other island nations.

In the coming days, workshops will continue at 9:00 am in the same space at the House of Culture, with the aim of promoting cultural exchange, the diverse influences that enrich the work of the Babul group, and showcasing the musical and dance genres of the Antilles.

Also the program includes the gathering Bajo La Ceiba,” this Friday in José Martí Park that brings together groups of different styles, such as the Danza Libre company, Danza Fragmentada, the Conjunto Artístico Integral de Montaña (Mountain Artistic Ensemble), and guest dancer Andrés Lorenzo, a former member of Babul.

The season will conclude on Saturday, November 29, with the show “Años” (Years) at the House of Culture, where the aforementioned groups will perform alongside the hosts.

During the performance, outstanding Babul’s artists will be recognized on the same stage where the company debuted in 1994.
