Guantánamo.- The Cuban delegation to the enthronement of Pope Leo XIV, headed by Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa, ended its visit to Italy this Monday, where it developed an intense agenda of activities.

The delegation, which on behalf of the Cuban State, Government, and people attended the ceremony held at the Vatican City on Sunday, included Caridad Diego, head of the Office of Attention to Religious Affairs at the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), and Deputy Foreign Minister Elio Rodriguez.

Valdes Mesa was received in the framework of that Eucharistic celebration by the new Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, to whom he reaffirmed his government’s willingness to continue working to strengthen relations between Cuba and the Holy See, as Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel previously expressed in a message.

The Cuban delegation arrived in Rome on May 16. As part of its activities, along with Ambassador to Italy, Mirta Granda, and Ambassador to the Holy See, Rene Mujica, paid homage to Pope Francis on Saturday morning.

Valdes Mesa and his accompanying delegation laid white roses at the man who was a sincere friend of the Caribbean nation’s people, in his simple tomb located in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
