Guantanamo.- Hurricane Oscar left numerous damages in its passage in the San Antonio del Sur Municipality, including survival stories like that of little Abram Daniel González Hernández, 12 years old. Early Sunday morning, the waters flooded his home, and the boy had to take refuge on the roof of the house with his family. However, his home was inundated with dirty floodwater by the strength of the storm, and Abram was swept away from his mother’s arms as he struggled to stay safe.
In the midst of desperation, Abram was swept into to the open sea, where a coconut plant hit him, complicating his situation. Despite the cold and danger, the child managed to cling to the vegetation and reach the shore. Neighbors helped him and, the next day, he was transferred to the Pedro Agustín Pérez provincial hospital.
According to Dr. Evis Navarro Perez, Abram arrived at the hospital with signs of sepsis in a wound on his left leg, caused during the incident. “We proceeded to perform a surgical debridement of the wound, and fortunately there were no bone or muscle injuries,” the doctor reported. The surgery was successful and, after 16 hours of evolution, the child’s condition is favorable. “The wound is clean and without odor, which indicates that the recovery will be positive,” Navarro added.
Abram is now in the care of her grandmother, who accompanies him in the hospital while he continues his treatment. Local authorities continue to assess the damage caused by the storm in San Antonio del Sur, while stories like Abram’s stand out among the rescue and recovery efforts.
