Guantanamo.- The highest authorities of the Party and Government in the province of Guantánamo indicated at the regular vitality meeting this Thursday that they have adopted all necessary measures to protect the population and economic resources in view of the possibility of heavy rains this weekend, associated with a tropical wave, a system associated with a low-pressure area over the Lesser Antilles.

In information provided via WhatsApp, Carlos Román González, Director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, explained that “due to the time of year, in the midst of hurricane season in Cuba, they are close monitoring this phenomenon, which is still only an active tropical wave currently affecting the island of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic with heavy rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

“The tropical wave is moving west-northwest at a speed of 24 kilometers per hour, and due to its trajectory, there is a possibility that, between Thursday night and early Friday morning, a large area of ​​low pressure will form. As it approaches the central Bahamas, it will have the potential to develop into a tropical depression or tropical cyclone, so extreme vigilance is essential.”

In a conversation via audio conference with the authorities of the ten Guantanamo municipalities and directors of provincial entities and organizations, Yoel Pérez García, First Secretary of the Party in Guantánamo, and Governor Alis Azahares Torreblanca indicated that they are reviewing their plans for possible hurricanes, impacts from heavy rains and flooding.

Priorities include protecting people, with emphasis on those living in flood zones and downstream of dams and other reservoirs, ensuring access to transportation and basic health equipment, monitoring rivers and other water reservoirs, and protecting food in stores, fuel, and all economic resources, along with keeping the population informed through official channels, media, and channels.
