Guantanamo.- From July 21st to 24th, Guantánamo hosts the First Provincial Festival of the Written Press, an event that celebrates the 63rd anniversary of the Venceremos Newspaper and pays tribute to the late journalist Pablo Soroa Fernández, one of the most recognized voices in the field in the province.
The Festival’s program includes various professional and cultural activities, including a panel dedicated to Soroa’s life and legacy, hosted by Taimí Fernández Pérez, president of the Cuban Journalist Association (UPEC, in Spanish), and comprised of journalists and specialists who highlight the impact of his work on Cuban journalism.
The journalistic writing workshops is also part of the activities. The workshop is led by Marelis Iznaga Reyes and Jorge Luis Merencio Cautín, with the aim of strengthening skills and sharing experiences among generations of reporters.
Commemorative audiovisual materials for the newspaper’s anniversary are also being released, which are displayed on its YouTube channel. The digital forum “Radiografía a Venceremos” (Radiography of Venceremos) is being launched, a space where the public can leave opinions and suggestions on the media outlet’s work.
The program also includes discussions with non-state sector workers and healthcare personnel, jury sessions for the Provincial Written Press Competition “Pablo Soroa,” and the publication of a podcast dedicated to his career.
The closing ceremony includes the competition’s awards ceremony and a best practices workshop, featuring presentations related to digital marketing, film criticism, digital rights in Cuba, and the coverage of boxing in the written press.
Pablo Soroa Fernández distinguished himself with his coherent, ethical, and truth-telling professional work. For decades, he represented the Cuban News Agency in Guantánamo and was a teacher and guide for several generations of reporters, who was a clear, direct, and deeply human professional.
This Festival reaffirms Guantanamo journalism’s commitment to quality, ethics, and a genuine connection with its audiences, in a context where social dialogue and responsible reporting are more necessary than ever.
