Left-handed pitcher Roennis Elías Leliebre was warmly welcomed in Guantanamo upon arriving at the Vitilla softball field – located in the southern neighborhood in this city – the same place where he took his first steps in baseball.

World Champion of the American Major Leagues in 2019 with the Washington Nationals and one of the members of the Cuba team for the Fifth World Classic, the player appreciated the welcome to his land that was attended by Richard Cruz Alcedo, Provincial Director of Sports, among other managers and workers in the sector, players and members of the community.

“I am very happy for this welcome. First of all I thank God for being here, always thinking about Guantanamo wherever I go…wherever I go I say that I am from Guantanamo. I am very happy to contribute to the World Classic, happy to this welcome they gave me today.”- he said.

Four years after becoming World Champion of the American Major Leagues, the star said: “…this is like a kind of energy. Getting here is reconnecting with the place where I started in baseball. I started in this field, in the

Vitilla field. I am very grateful to all the coaches who accompanied me during my career, who have helped me. I am very happy to share here with everyone, with the family and very special with the children.”

The encounter of Roennis Elías with Guantanamo people was a day of joy, in which there was no shortage of time for the pitcher to star in a baseball practice with the children of the community.
