Guantánamo.- The Guantánamo Ranger Corps reports a wildfire that spread uncontrolled since July 22 in the La Culebra area, part of the Casimba People’s Council, in the municipality of Niceto Pérez.

The fire is spreading toward towns bordering the neighboring province of Santiago de Cuba. According to the relevant authorities, the fire is classified as dangerous and of high magnitude. The flames burn in a hard-to-reach location. The firebreak method is being applied because the fire is out of control and the area is having water shortage.

To extinguish the flames, support has been requested from the Eastern Army, which will use a helicopter to transport large quantities of water.

So far, 17 forest rangers, 32 fire technicians, and five volunteers are participating in the action, while a Zil 131 truck is also being used.

The damage has spread to approximately 70 hectares of highly combustible wildland vegetation. The Provincial and Municipal Temporary Group has been activated in recent days.
