\"\"Guantanamo.- With a tribute to Generalissimo M\u00e1ximo G\u00f3mez B\u00e1ez, the National Day of the Cuban Historian begins today in Guant\u00e1namo, as it does throughout the country. This event, organized by the Cuban Historians Association (UNHIC), will run until July 31st.<\/p>\n

Its objective is to highlight the significance of history in the Cuban context and encourage the active participation of the community of academics dedicated to historiography. This year, the event pays tribute not only to the outstanding General G\u00f3mez, on the 120th<\/sup> anniversary of his death, but also to Eusebio Leal Spengler, a prominent historian of Havana, who passed away on July 31, 2020.<\/p>\n

Milais Pi\u00f1eda Lazo, Organizational Secretary of the Provincial Secretariat of the Union of Historians in Guant\u00e1namo, stated that the kickoff event took place at the University of Medical Sciences, where the grassroots section, chaired by Professor of Marxism-Leninism and History Magal\u00eds S\u00e1nchez Turcaz convened a special morning meeting with students and professors to honor G\u00f3mez, a senior Dominican military officer who served in the Cuban Wars of Independence.<\/p>\n

Pi\u00f1eda Lazo also confirmed that the University of Medical Sciences is planning to hold the “Magdalena Cantillo Fr\u00f3meta” provincial event on June 28th. This event will allow members of the UNHIC and researchers from the province to present their research work, which will be selected for the National History Congress to be held in October in the province of Las Tunas.<\/p>\n

On July 1st, the National Act for Cuban Historian’s Day will be held in Guant\u00e1namo at the Mariana Grajales Coello Plaza. Jorge Luis Aneiros Alonso, National President of the UNHIC and Director of the Office of Historical Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic of Cuba, will be present at the act. The event will also honor the most prominent Guantanamo intellectuals and grassroots groups in the territory.<\/p>\n

Likewise, historians from the Upper East do efforts to rescue and beautify important plaques, monuments, and historical sites in our province, while participating in book presentations, promoting outstanding scientific works.
