{"id":14129,"date":"2025-10-02T17:27:27","date_gmt":"2025-10-02T21:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/?p=14129"},"modified":"2025-10-02T17:41:02","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T21:41:02","slug":"cuban-president-assesses-damage-from-heavy-rains-in-guantanamo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/cuban-president-assesses-damage-from-heavy-rains-in-guantanamo\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban President Assesses Damage from Heavy Rains in Guant\u00e1namo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Guantanamo.- <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/diaz_canel_guantanamo2-e1759416110425-768x549-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/diaz_canel_guantanamo2-e1759416110425-768x549-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/diaz_canel_guantanamo2-e1759416110425-768x549-1-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel Berm\u00fadez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic of Cuba, is leading a visit for several municipalities in the province of Guant\u00e1namo to assess the damage and the progress of recovery following the rains associated with Tropical Storm Imelda, which recently hit the eastern territory.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanied by Manuel Marrero Cruz and In\u00e9s Mar\u00eda Chapman Waugh, Cuban Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, respectively, and the highest political and governmental authorities in Guantanamo, the President visited the towns of Hatibonico, in the municipality of Caimanera, and Ullao, in Niceto P\u00e9rez, where intense rains caused flooding that cut off several settlements.<\/p>\n<p>In the settlement of Hatibonico, an ecological reserve site, 657 millimeters of rain were recorded in 72 hours, and in Ullao, where 1,187 residents mostly live in multi-family buildings, 597 millimeters of rain were recorded in 72 hours, which caused roof leaks and the R\u00edo Seco overflowed its banks inundating nearby homes.<\/p>\n<p>Rogelio Castillo Mart\u00ednez, president of the Ullao People&#8217;s Council, explained that work is underway to restore, clean, and sanitize the town, located about 25 kilometers southwest of Guant\u00e1namo City and close to the border with the illegal U.S. naval base in Guant\u00e1namo Bay.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;
