{"id":14765,"date":"2025-12-10T16:46:52","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T21:46:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/?p=14765"},"modified":"2025-12-10T16:55:33","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T21:55:33","slug":"knitting-life-in-crochet-with-wings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/knitting-life-in-crochet-with-wings\/","title":{"rendered":"Knitting  Life in Crochet with Wings (+ Photos)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/virgen-lopez_lesyanisartesanas-10.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"851\" \/>Guant\u00e1namo \u2013 Since 2013, the sociocultural project Crochet con Alas (Crochet with Wings), led by renowned art instructor Mar\u00eda Cristina Vel\u00e1zquez Leyva, has been a creative space for some twenty Guantanamo women as \u00a0Virgen L\u00f3pez Gamboa and her granddaughter Leyasni Campo Romero who knitting <span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hgKElc pOOWX\">different stitches<\/span><\/span> create utilitarian itmes and support themselves economically\u2014a right that demonstrates resilience in these times when everyday experiences awaken consciences, inspire, and foster collective action.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34952\" src=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/IMG-20251209-WA0008.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alongside the Crochet with Wings project, the 63 years old retired women Virgen\u00a0 and Leyasni, a 19 years\u00a0 old librarian, who is expecting his first baby unmarried, participate in visual arts events, handcraft fairs on the city&#8217;s boulevard, and various community activities that foster social connections and the exchange of experiences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34949 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/virgen-lopez_lesyanisartesanas-2-e1765333842317.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"783\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the Rub\u00e9n L\u00f3pez Sabariego House of Culture in the municipality of Guant\u00e1namo, the grandmother and granddaughter participate in workshops every Thursday, where they learn half single and double crochet and create their own hand made item with reclyed materials.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-34950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/virgen-lopez_lesyanisartesanas-9.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"626\" height=\"835\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They also present their work at exhibitions, festivals, and other initiatives organized by the artisans&#8217;
