With workdays of up to 18 hours and precarious conditions, the workers launched a massive strike to demand an eight-hour workday. The turning point came on May 4th with the Haymarket Riot, when the police brutally suppressed the protests, resulting in deaths and arrests.<\/p>\n<p>Eight union leaders were convicted; four of them, known as the Chicago Martyrs, were executed, becoming a global symbol of the workers&#8217; struggle.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39816 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/martires-chicago1.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/martires-chicago1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.radioguantanamo.icrt.cu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/martires-chicago1-265x300.jpg 265w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"340\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1889, the Second International declared May Day as a holiday of proletarian\u2019s demonstration and remembrance. Cuba was a pioneer in joining this celebration, bringing together thousands of workers starting in 1890.<\/p>\n<p>In Guant\u00e1namo, this tradition began in 1924 at the Campoamor Theater, with the participation of various local unions. Nicomedes Quiala \u00c1lvarez, a prominent leader known as \u201cPijindi,\u201d delivered a landmark speech commemorating the sacrifices of the working class and highlighting the October Socialist Revolution in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, May Day has strengthened the unity and resilience of the Cuban working class.
