To date, this investment has helped guarantee signal transmission and landline telephone services in the ten municipal capitals of Cuba\u2019s easternmost and most mountainous province.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative, promoted by ETECSA\u2019s territorial division in Guant\u00e1namo, seeks to transform the energy matrix of the telecommunications sector. It is helping to mitigate the difficult situation affecting transmission services due to fuel shortages while expanding the availability of telecommunications services for the population.<\/p>\n<p>The engineer Lenin As\u00edn Ordu\u00f1ez, head of the investment department at ETECSA Guant\u00e1namo, explained:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, photovoltaic systems have been installed in the urban centers of the municipalities of El Salvador, San Antonio del Sur, Im\u00edas, and Yateras. During this first phase, these installations have made it possible to provide landline telephone service, data transmission, and Wi-Fi access in the municipal capitals, with Wi-Fi available only in locations that have backup power systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the electricity shortage,\u201d As\u00edn Ordu\u00f1ez added, \u201ca photovoltaic system was also installed at the telephone exchange in the northern area of the provincial capital. This allows services to operate during the day and saves fuel for nighttime operations.
