Guantanamo.- Cuban authorities on Monday welcomed members of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Open Arms, who set sail on the sailboat \u201cAstral\u201d from Canc\u00fan on August 29, on their second solidarity mission to the Caribbean nation.<\/p>\n
On Monday afternoon, the activists were welcomed at the Havana International Cruise Terminal as members of the flotilla \u201cHeading to Cuba,\u201d an initiative spearheaded by the NGO Open Arms.<\/p>\n
This second mission includes a cargo of seven tons of medical supplies and powdered milk for hospitals in the capital.<\/p>\n
With the participation of Mexican solidarity organizations and hospitals in the Latin American country, this initiative, launched by the NGO in July, aims to break the economic blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States.<\/p>\n
In statements to the press, the NGO\u2019s founder, \u00d3scar Camps, emphasized the significance that the current situation on the island holds for the members of Open Arms.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we arrived in July, we saw firsthand what was happening in the hospitals, and above all, what was lacking. We could have finished the mission and gone home, but when you know exactly what they need and you can do something, you can no longer say you didn\u2019t know.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019ve returned,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by the Vice Governor of Havana, Reinol Garc\u00eda; the Vice President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Noem\u00ed Rabaza; and representatives of the Mexican diplomatic corps accredited here.<\/p>\n
