On this day, Cuba honors their legacy, recognizing their choice to face death rather than betray their comrades to the enemy.

Both women were humble peasants who played crucial roles as messengers for the Rebel Army during the struggle against Fulgencio Batista’s regime. Their bravery allowed them to undertake dangerous missions assigned by Fidel Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara, significantly contributing to the revolutionary efforts in the Sierra Maestra.

Lidia, at 40, joined the Rebel Army after the Granma landing in December 1956, taking on high-risk tasks that included transporting guerrilla newspapers and medical supplies. Clodomira, only 20, was part of the underground 26th of July Movement and later served as a messenger in Column No. 1. Their paths converged during a critical mission in Havana, where they were ultimately captured due to betrayal.

Lidia and Clodomira were forcibly removed from their residence and taken to the 11th Police Station, where they endured severe torture but chose to remain silent. On September 17, 1958, their bodies were disposed of in sacks filled with sand and stones, cast into the sea.

Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro honored these brave women, describing Clodomira as a humble yet intelligent individual who, alongside Lidia, faced torture without divulging any secrets to their captors. Their resilience in the face of brutality exemplified their unwavering commitment to the cause.

Lidia Doce, remembered fondly by “El Guerrillero Heroico,” was a bakery owner who passionately supported the revolutionary efforts after her son joined the fight. Today, Cuba commemorates their legacy of dedication and selflessness, which continues to motivate the nation in its pursuit of independence.

Guantanamo.- September 17 commemorates the 68th anniversary of the assassination of two remarkable women, Lidia Doce and Clodomira Ferrals.
