This collective is bound by a strong sense of Cuban patriotism, dedicated to providing essential services to their communities and the nation.

To appreciate their history, one must reflect on the events of that pivotal September night when Fidel Castro addressed a massive crowd near the Palace of the Revolution, declaring, “We are going to establish a system of collective revolutionary vigilance.”

This declaration came shortly after a small explosive device, planted by counter-revolutionary forces, detonated, yet the nearly one million attendees remained resolute, singing the National Anthem and supporting Castro.

He emphasized the underestimated power of the people, stating, “They are playing with the people and do not yet know who the people are; they are playing with the people and do not know the tremendous revolutionary strength that lies within the people.”

The concept of revolutionary vigilance became the cornerstone of the CDRs’ mission during that era, focusing on the robust defense of the Revolution’s accomplishments. Within just over six months of their inception, the CDRs were instrumental in dismantling “fifth-column” cells aligned with imperial interests.

Their influence has consistently extended to every neighborhood and city block across the island, effectively collaborating with various institutions, including the Ministry of the Interior.

The enduring spirit of service, volunteerism, and humanism that characterizes Cuban society ensures continuity in its values. Central to this commitment is the unwavering belief in the just cause being defended, a reality that remains steadfast.

The contributions of the organization’s members to blood donation campaigns have been particularly noteworthy, significantly bolstering the Cuban healthcare system over the years.

These selfless, voluntary efforts have saved numerous lives through a unique solidarity program unmatched globally. Additionally, hundreds of hours have been devoted to restoring communities and agricultural initiatives affected by hurricanes, despite the presence of an efficient emergency response system.

The Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs) have also been instrumental in facilitating discussions on the 2019 Constitution and the Family Code, ensuring robust public engagement at the grassroots level. In the face of a tightening blockade, the CDRs continue to actively collaborate with various agencies to address social welfare and support vulnerable populations.

Source: ACN

Guantanamo.- Sixty-six years after their establishment on the significant date of September 28, 1960, the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs) continue to play a vital role in the fabric of national life, undertaking substantial responsibilities while remaining focused on the foundational goals that guided their creation.
