The southern municipalities of the province are expected to experience the greatest impact.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting the population is the main priority of the measures adopted to minimize the damage that the rains could cause.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the emergency preparations, authorities have ordered the collection of essential agricultural products and the expansion of food supplies through all available channels, including offers from different economic sectors.<\/p>\n<p>To guarantee healthcare services, officials are checking the availability of medicines and medical supplies, as well as backup power systems for hospitals and polyclinics.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are also strengthening surveillance of reservoirs and water-supply sources, particularly those operating at more than 90 percent of their capacity. This includes Los Asientos reservoir in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur.<\/p>\n<p>Residents in areas prone to flooding are being evacuated when necessary. Mountain transport, work brigades, and heavy machinery have been mobilized to maintain access to all communities. Search-and-rescue teams are also on standby to respond in the event of an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Students in boarding schools are being protected, while those currently staying at home will not return to school until weather conditions improve.<\/p>\n<p>Yoel P\u00e9rez Garc\u00eda, president of the Provincial Defense Council in Guant\u00e1namo, urged residents to act responsibly and cautiously and to remain informed through official media outlets, including government channels, Facebook pages, and other social networks.<\/p>\n<p>According to the forecast, rainfall is expected to intensify on the evening and night of Saturday, October 24.<\/p>\n<p>The weather situation affecting eastern Cuba is associated with a trough southeast of the Gulf of Mexico that is moving toward the region.
