The agency will assess the impact of the crisis in the country and in South Sudan, where many of the displaced people arrive, and the violence since hostilities broke out between the Sudanese national army and the RSF militia.<\/p>\n

According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Radhoune Noucier, the war affects everything from basic guarantees to the economy and the legal system, which demands an urgent ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Out of 45 million formerly living in the country, more than seven million were displaced internally and to neighboring nations, while half of the total population needs humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations Office of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which warned last week that more than 13,000 people were killed and another 26,000 injured since the conflict began.<\/p>\n

The expansion of hostilities to Wad Madani, the country\u2019s second largest city, located about 140 kilometers southeast of the capital, further deteriorated the situation of civilians from Khartoum, and other provinces affected by violence- It also caused the departure of more than half a million people from the beginning of January, a figure that continues to rise and that includes many who had already left their homes before.<\/p>\n

The country is the scene of the largest displaced persons crisis in the world according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).<\/p>\n

The context for the displaced population demands global attention and an immediate ceasefire, said IOM Director General Amy Pope after personally confirming the devastating impact during a recent visit to eastern Chad. \u201cA ceasefire is urgently needed, so people can rebuild their lives with dignity. We must not turn our backs on the suffering of millions of people affected by such a devastating conflict,\u201d Pope said.<\/p>\n
