The WTO director called for a \u201creimagining of globalization\u201d on a meeting at the headquarters of the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), where 13 regional countries are represented.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now facing protectionism and unilateral actions by big nations, some of which have already benefited from this system, and are now saying that globalization no longer works,\u201d the authority said.<\/p>\n

Okonjo-Iweala described as shameful the lack of progress on agricultural issues, despite the importance of food security, which she considered a major problem.<\/p>\n

The leader further recalled that during the last two years progress was made on agreements such as the negotiations on harmful subsidies to fisheries.<\/p>\n

\u201cCuba, Uruguay, Chile and Peru have ratified the agreement. So I need the rest to do so. It\u2019s paramount, because we don\u2019t want harmful subsidies that can encourage illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing of our oceans,\u201d the WTO senior representative asserted.<\/p>\n

The WTO director had meetings here with the FM Omar Paganini. She further met with the Ministers of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Matos, and of Industry, Energy and Mining Elisa Facio.<\/p>\n
