Guantanamo.- The 12th Annual Guaso Domino Classic, initially scheduled for November, has been moved up to September 23–27.
According to Senén Ramírez Carmenate, head of the provincial Domino Management and Development Group, the date was changed because the World Domino Championship, organized by FEMUNDO (the World Domino Federation), will be held in the Dominican Republic from October 27 to 31.
As a result, the Classic will feature not only its traditional roster of players but also the country’s top competitors, including those who qualified for the World Championship. Among them are Guantánamo natives Olvis Rodríguez, Maikel Tabío, Yunior Esteban, and Amaury Londres.
Ramírez Carmenate reported that a delegation from the Dominican Republic is expected to participate in the Classic. The delegation will include players of the highest competitive level. He also explained that the competition will be held in two formats: eight-player teams, competing over 15 rounds, and doubles, competing over 21 rounds.
In the team competition, Guantánamo will field four teams representing four People’s Councils.
It is speculated that, in the doubles competition, multiple Classic champion Olvis Rodríguez will not be partnered with his usual teammate, Yousmel Acosta. At this point, it remains unknown who will play alongside him.
During the 12th Guaso Classic, a course for national referees in this popular board game will also be held. The course is sponsored by the University of Guantánamo, which also supports the Classic, along with the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation and the Provincial Council of Sports Clubs.
