Guantánamo.- Miguel Velázquez Hernández, a sixth-year medical student at the Guantanamo University of Medical Sciences (UCMGT), received the National Student Research Award at the Guantanamo Convention Center. This award is granted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements.

The award ceremony took place within the framework of the 15th International Environmental Convention (Cubambiente 2025), where 59 young people with outstanding performance in the sector were recognized.

Velázquez Hernández, also a student assistant and undergraduate instructor in the Ophthalmology specialty, has a long career as a researcher, with tangible results supported by his participation in more than 150 scientific conferences and events at the international, national, and provincial levels. He also has a total of 57 scientific publications, 25 of which are in student and professional scientific journals, and 32 on websites or Infomed sites.

He is also editor of the Student Scientific Journal, Gaceta Médica Estudiantil, and reviewer of other national publications. He is a member of the UCMGT Student Scientific Council and holds various Honorary Chairs.

In 2022, he was awarded the provincial CITMA Award and in 2024 the Annual Health Award for the eastern territory, among other recognitions.

This is the second time that the CITMA has awarded this high recognition to a UCMGT student. Given the importance of young scientists for the country’s economic and social development, aligned with the National Economic and Social Development Plan to 2030, CITMA annually recognizes the most relevant works of the new generations of scientists and technologists.

The award acknowledges the work of young students with high teaching achievement from the curricular perspective in Higher Education, both in undergraduate and short-term programs, and the careers of young researchers and young technologists, university graduates under 35 years of age.
