Guantanamo.- Nine distinguished healthcare professionals were honored with the Scientific Merit Lifetime Achievement Award at the 49th annual Guantánamo Health Awards ceremony, which took place at the Dr. Agostinho Neto General Teaching Hospital theater.

Dr. Gloria Abijana Damien, a prominent figure in Dermatology, was among the recipients. The 2026 Guantanamo Annual Health Award competition featured over 60 submissions across various categories, including Technological Innovation and Applied Research, as noted by Dr. Anselma Betancourt Pulsan, director of the Provincial Council of Scientific Health Societies.

The jury recognized 25 scientific works with awards and granted honorable mentions to 18 others. Noteworthy projects included multimedia innovations addressing violence against the elderly, the implementation of an intermittent aspiration system for medical gas stations, and the use of vascular prostheses to replace main bile ducts.
