Guantánamo.- Joaquín Díaz Cantillo, the director of the Guantánamo Electric Company, reported that the province experienced power outages lasting up to 24 hours due to a nationwide electricity generation deficit.

Many circuits in the city were without power for over 20 consecutive hours, a situation he described as extremely challenging for local families.

The primary reason for these outages is the shutdown of key plants in the national power grid, particularly the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant, which is undergoing intensive repairs to restore its operation and stability. Despite efforts, Guantánamo has struggled to mitigate the ongoing outages affecting its circuits.

Díaz Cantillo noted that the company tracks outage durations daily and adjusts supply based on available generation, but current conditions prevent them from ensuring service restoration in under 20 hours.

He also highlighted the complications caused by grid overload when power is restored, as simultaneous reconnections can lead to malfunctions. To improve the situation, he mentioned the development of energy storage systems to support solar production, as the province’s solar parks currently utilize only a fraction of their capacity due to system instability.
