Guantanamo.- Guantánamo is advancing with its program to install photovoltaic systems at ETECSA telecommunications centers. To date, this investment has helped guarantee signal transmission and landline telephone services in the ten municipal capitals of Cuba’s easternmost and most mountainous province.
The initiative, promoted by ETECSA’s territorial division in Guantánamo, seeks to transform the energy matrix of the telecommunications sector. It is helping to mitigate the difficult situation affecting transmission services due to fuel shortages while expanding the availability of telecommunications services for the population.
The engineer Lenin Asín Orduñez, head of the investment department at ETECSA Guantánamo, explained:
“So far, photovoltaic systems have been installed in the urban centers of the municipalities of El Salvador, San Antonio del Sur, Imías, and Yateras. During this first phase, these installations have made it possible to provide landline telephone service, data transmission, and Wi-Fi access in the municipal capitals, with Wi-Fi available only in locations that have backup power systems.”
“Because of the electricity shortage,” Asín Orduñez added, “a photovoltaic system was also installed at the telephone exchange in the northern area of the provincial capital. This allows services to operate during the day and saves fuel for nighttime operations. At present, solar panels are also being installed at the radio base station of the ETECSA territorial office and at the telecommunications center in the city of Guantánamo.”
“Our goal is to extend these investments to all telephone exchanges and mobile radio base stations in the province, as well as to all telecommunications facilities that support both landline and mobile services.”
