Guantanamo.- Today, we commemorate the International Day of Peace in a world marked by escalating wars, where violence is gaining ground and many governments are failing to uphold their commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts—thereby placing human survival itself at risk.
Under the theme “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” the United Nations calls for the promotion of a culture of peace—a responsibility shared by all of us. Yet, what we continue to witness is a lack of concrete action to halt genocides and human rights violations around the world.
In this context, Cuba reaffirms its commitment to peace, justice, equity, and mutual respect among nations, despite the persistent hostility of the United States government, which continues to intensify its economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the island and to keep Cuba on its discredited list of state sponsors of terrorism.
On a day when peace is being widely invoked, we must state clearly that this genocidal blockade is, in itself, an act of war. For more than six decades, Cuban families have experienced its effects firsthand, enduring consequences that cannot be measured solely through statistics. Behind every shortage of food or medicine, and every hardship resulting in severe humanitarian damage, there are real people and human stories.
In the face of the U.S. siege—which reached unprecedented levels following the executive order issued on May 1 of this year—Cuba once again reaffirms its commitment to peace. It remains open to dialogue with the United States, provided that its independence and sovereignty are respected.
On this International Day of Peace, Cuba also calls for a new international order—one that is democratic, just, and inclusive, and capable of confronting the philosophy of war and dispossession. We echo the warning issued by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez about the grave danger posed by the imperialist doctrine of imposing peace through force as a mechanism of global domination.
Cuba seeks to live in peace and remains committed to defending this principle throughout the world, recognizing peace as a necessary condition for the development and well-being of all peoples.
