Guantanamo.- Guantánamo will host activities marking Haitian Day in Cuba 2026 from September 22 to 25, in a program organized by the Association of Haitians and Descendants of Guantánamo and the Lakou Lwa Sociocultural Project.
The four-day program will feature activities highlighting the history, culture, and traditions of the Haitian community in Cuba.
The events will begin on Tuesday, September 22, at the Regino Eladio Boti Public Library, with a tribute to Emilio Bárcenas Pier on the centenary of his birth. The program will include a presentation on his life and a digital presentation of The Island Beneath the Sea, by Chilean writer Isabel Allende.
On Wednesday, September 23, the Café Cantante América, operated by ARTEX, will host a panel discussion focusing on the historical ties between Fidel Castro, Haitians in Cuba, and Haiti, followed by a performance by the traditional cultural group Assossyé.
On Thursday, September 24, activities at the Rubén López Sabariego House of Culture will include a Haitian ballroom dance workshop and an exhibition of traditional Haitian dishes.
Later that afternoon, the Lakou Lwa headquarters will host a Gagá procession to Ranchón de Cobango, featuring traditional cultural groups as well as children’s and youth ensembles.
The celebration will also recognize the 25 years of cultural work by the Renacer Cossía children’s and youth group, while highlighting the roots, traditions, and contributions of the Haitian community to the cultural heritage of Guantánamo and Cuba.
The program offers another opportunity to highlight the history, cultural heritage, and enduring ties between Cuba and Haiti.
