Guantanamo.- An innovative international collaboration project guarantees sustainable and healthy food for the students of the Mártires 12 de Abril School, in Jamaica town, in the municipality of Manuel Tames.

The initiative is guided by the Russian specialists and it is part of the National Food Program and the Sustainable School Feeding Initiative (AES+) that brings together local producers and provides them with supplies to help with the school’s lunch program, improving both learning and agricultural productivity.

Zoraida Rojas Fernández, the school’s principal, explained that this project originated in 2021 and was implemented in three municipalities in the province. In the case of Manuel Tames, the Frank País Credit and Services Cooperative (CCS) and, in particular, the renowned producer Luis Enrique Simón Savón are participating in the project.

The farmers participating in the program have been provided with essential machinery to modernize their work: a tractor, irrigation systems, and jam-making equipment, allowing them to increase efficiency and improve the quality of their products.

At the same time, they are ensuring food for 78 students who can remain at the school, which promotes greater school stability, improves class organization, and, most importantly, enhances the learning process. Sixteen teachers at the Pastor Martínez Primary School, located in the village of Casimba Arriba, are also benefiting.

This project is generating employment opportunities in the community and strengthening the relationship between educational institutions and the local agricultural sector.
