The Pedro Agustín Pérez Pediatric Hospital, in Guantanamo, became the first to begin the hospital accreditation process in the province, with a training meeting for leaders, doctors, and the diagnostic means, laboratory and pediatric specialty polyclinic personnel.

During the meeting, the participants addressed the organization of the process, the creation of teams for self-assessment, the development of plans in the departments to identify their problems and possible solutions, and established the accreditation commission chaired by the director and his board of directors.

Rafael Ruiz Basulto, second-degree specialist in Intensive and Emergency Therapy and Pediatrics, and advisor to the aforementioned commission, explained that the accreditation process will evaluate three aspects, patient safety management, teaching accreditation and security management of the hospital.

The first, he exemplified, includes 27 quality standards within several elements to evaluate in each one, including the complete clinical history, diagnostic discussion, nutritional evaluation, genetics…, and everything used throughout the patient care process.

Meanwhile, teaching accreditation process includes the training of human resources, and hospital safety management ranges from the quality of the laboratory and equipment in terms of metrology, electromedicine…, to other administrative aspects and accounting, Dr. Ruiz Basulto, explained.

The prestigious doctor assured that they are currently working on the execution schedule of the different actions, which must be organized before convening the National Accreditation Board of the Ministry of Public Health, ultimately responsible for the process.

Hospital accreditation, he pointed out, is promoted in Cuba and in the world. These standards have been adopted by recognized accreditation agencies throughout the world to raise the quality of all processes, with a comprehensive vision, and a change of mentality that involves all workers, and also needs the support of organizations.

The Pedro Agustín Pérez Pediatric Hospital, which today has 26 specialties, of which, eight of surgery, 143 nurses and 164 doctors, including 20 residents, and 215 admission beds, is also currently working on the accreditation of the Pediatrics career.
