The easternmost of Cuba’s provinces stands out for the work of the protected areas system, as part of the provincial environmental strategy that has among its priorities safeguarding the environment in favor of preserving life and the planet as the common home of all humanity.

Guantánamo has 12 protected areas within a management plan aimed at the achieving satisfactory state of conservation and also carrying out actions in other areas, which, although not included in that system, the areas are distinguished by their biodiversity, beauty of the landscapes, among others values.

Likewise, the work of environmentalists to avoid disasters stands out, which led to the approval at the national level of 10 studies of PVR Hazards, Vulnerabilities and Risks, which assess the impact of various phenomena.

Based on these investigations, it was learned that the municipalities of Guantanamo, Baracoa and El Salvador are the most likely to suffer damage to the housing fund caused by hurricane season, a valuable information to take appropriate measures in that case.

These studies also revealed the dangers of fire, toxic gas leaks, among others that persist in various facilities in the province, very useful knowledge for decision-makers of the entities and at the government level in order to reduce these threats.

As part of the environmental strategy, it also distinguishes the Guantanamo Bay decontamination program, whose actions involve the management of liquid waste, investments and the implementation of the management system in enterprises that constitute large generators of harmful substances to the environment.][/bg_collapse]
