Guantanamo.- Meanwhile, specialists from the Provincial Meteorological Center of Guantánamo have developed and implemented a comprehensive methodology to recover, digitize, and quality-check analog records of atmospheric phenomena. The resulting database will support research on climate variability and climate change and can be adapted to the operational context of the meteorological station network in the eastern region.
The study, led by Master of Science Yurielky Duran Díaz and Doctor Arisleidys Peña de la Cruz, combines manual digitization with the preservation and storage of metadata. This process has produced a high-quality spatial database covering the 1996–2024 period, providing an essential foundation for local climate assessments, geographic information systems, and advanced statistical analyses.
The research was carried out at meteorological stations in Guantánamo, Punta de Maisí, Jamal-Baracoa, Palenque de Yateras, and Valle de Caujerí in San Antonio del Sur. It establishes a scientific basis for adaptive management and climate resilience in the fragile ecosystems of Cuba’s easternmost province.
The methodology incorporated both analog and digital information sources, including meteorological observation logs, models of atmospheric phenomena held at weather stations in Guantánamo, and records from the System for the Settlement and Review of Observations.
The primary findings of this scientific research are presented in one of the 2026 quarterly editions of the digital journal “Hombre, Ciencia y Tecnología” (“Human, Science, and Technology”), published by the Knowledge and Technology Management Enterprise (GECYT) in Guantánamo.
