Guantánamo – On February 1st, in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, Guantánamo, the first 15 homes built with adapted shipping containers were delivered, marking the beginning of a series of social benefits in the town.

This event was attended by Yoel Pérez García, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province, as well as other government officials.

According to a report by the Cuban News Agency (ACN), the new homes are located in the “24 de Febrero” community, and it is included in a larger project that aims to build a total of 70 homes in the province.

This effort is intended to help people who lost their homes due to Hurricanes Oscar and Melissa. The adaptation of shipping containers represents an innovative and efficient solution to the housing needs following natural disasters.

This project reflects the Cuban government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of those affected and contributing to the social and economic development of the region. It also constitutes an important step toward the recovery and resilience of the community of San Antonio del Sur.

Likewise, a new Maternity Home was inaugurated in the chief town of San Antonio del Sur, which is located in the former premises of a senior citizens’ home. This center is intended for the care for pregnant women up to 34 weeks of gestation and has 20 beds, with the aim of strengthening maternal and child health care in the region.

Madiel Cobas Matos, the municipal health director, highlighted that San Antonio del Sur, with a population of 25,000, has the lowest infant mortality rate in the province (3.87 until 2025).

The Maternity Home is equipped with a consultation room, dining room, laundry facilities, and a recreation room with a television, refrigerator, and fans. Furthermore, it boasts a team of highly trained professionals, including doctors, gynecologists, nurses, and support staff such as janitors and cooks, ensuring comprehensive and personalized care.

In the same area, the “Hugo Chávez Frías” Senior Citizens’ Home was also inaugurated. It has a capacity for 30 senior citizens, although it currently houses six. This center offers various services, including occupational therapy and recreational activities, thus contributing to the well-being of the elderly.

The First Secretary of the PCC, Pérez García, called upon the community and institutions to maintain these facilities in optimal condition, as they represent a significant step forward in addressing the needs of the population of San Antonio del Sur.
