Guantanamo.- Since its first celebration on September 23, 2018, Guantánamo has joined the activities for the International Day of Sign Languages, the Cuban language recently recognized by the Council of State as the official language of the deaf community in the nation.
The date is part of the International Week of Deaf People, which begins this Monday until the 28th of this month, and has this year’s motto: Sign language by right. Join us!
The day is an opportunity to protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity not only of deaf people but also of all sign language users.
Yamisel Ramos Ramírez, provincial president of ANSOC, expressed the importance of promoting the use of sign languages or gestural production as a source of access to information, knowledge and development for those people with deafness and hearing loss.
She also said that they carry out meetings with families and the directors of organizations and institutions such as the educational sector in charge of promoting the participation and inclusion of this segment of the population, in defense of their rights and opportunities.
She also recognized the work of interpreters and activists who play an important role through the media by enabling timely information to the entire Cuban deaf community.

The National Association of Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deafblind People (ANSOC) has promoted since its creation in 1978, respect for sign language and its introduction in the pedagogical context, the increase in the number of interpreter positions, the training of deaf people as instructors of Cuban Sign Language (LSC) and teaching assistants.
