Guantanamo.- During a solemn session held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Local Organs of People’s Power, Guantánamo paid tribute to constituency delegates, whom Fidel Castro described as the heroes of the community.

The ceremony took place at the historic site where this governmental structure was founded—the former Spanish Casino, now home to the Rubén López Sabariego House of Culture.

The event also commemorated the centenary of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and was attended by Yoel Pérez García, First Secretary of the Communist Party in Guantánamo Province, and Alis Azahares Torreblanca, the provincial governor.

Founders, former members of the leadership of previous terms, and delegates—past and present—were also recognized for their outstanding role in building Cuba’s political system.

They were praised as key figures in defending the Revolution and its social achievements despite the obstacles posed by what was described as the hegemonic imperial power and its campaigns against the country.

In accordance with the powers granted by the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, the municipal governing body presented the Delegate Award to several men and women in recognition of their commitment to popular resistance, their guidance in the work of building socialism, and their determination to preserve national sovereignty.

Special recognition was given to Clara Lidia Digurnay Durruthy for her unwavering dedication over 32 years, during which she has been one of the pillars in the construction and strengthening of Cuba’s system of government.

During the solemn session of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power in Guantánamo, held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of these governing bodies, speakers emphasized that the honorees represent the face of socialist democracy and the daily work of the people.
