Guantanamo.- With ten solar parks that contribute 37.38 megawatts, plus 1.7 megawatts from mini-hydroelectric plants and 3.0 megawatts from biomass generated at the Argeo Martínez Sugar Mill during the harvest season, Guantánamo Province is making progress in shifting its energy matrix toward renewable energy sources.
According to Ignacio Cuscó Bazzi, Coordinator of Programs and Objectives for the Provincial Government of People’s Power, the province has an installed capacity of 134.24 megawatts for delivery to the National Electric System, including distributed generation from generator sets.
The province currently has five state-owned entities with photovoltaic systems that all together generate 0.026 megawatts. Notable progress has been made at the El Algarrobo park, with a capacity of 21.75 megawatts and 92.04 percent completion. San Pedro Dos (10 megawatts) and Jesús Lores (2.2 megawatts) have reached 59 percent and 60.03 percent of their capacity, respectively.
Regarding the electrification of isolated rural communities, the province has 104 complete 2-kilowatt peak systems, part of a national program for 360 homes. The installation of solar panels is currently underway in Yateras, with 48 systems, three of which are already installed, and in El Salvador, where the installation of 13 systems began this week.
