Guantanamo.-Leaders and representatives of pacifist and solidarity organizations from around the world, unite in Guantanamo to raise their voices against wars and in favor of the sovereignty of peoples, during the 8th International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, which takes place on May 4 and 5 in this eastern territory of Cuba.

The event began with a wreatho to the patriot Mariana Grajales in the square that bears her name, where Governor Alis Azahares Torreblanca welcomed the delegates and provided a socioeconomic overview of the easternmost province of the country, characterized by its cultural, historical and economic values and where the US naval base imposed more than 100 years ago against the will of the Cuban people and government is located.

The city’s historian, José Sanchez Guerra, offered the participants a lecture on the usurpation of the Guantanamo territory of Caimanera by the Whasginton government in 1903 with the imposition of a military enclave -against the will of the people- and its political, economic, social and environmental impact.

Fernando Gonzalez, Heroe of the Republic of Cuba and president of the Cuban Friendship Institute, the agency that sponsors the event, said that the it is held in the midst of  a complex world scenario, mainly in the Middle East and Europe.

Also convened by the World Peace Council, this issue brings together 80 participants from 26 countries, including pacifists, union leaders and academics, who will once again speak out for the elimination of enclaves in the world, the end of the Zionist attacks against Palestine, the cessation of the US blockade against Cuba, among other demands.

 

The closing of the Seminar is scheduled for this Sunday in Caimanera, a territory bordering the illegal Yankee naval base located here for more than 120 years against the will of the Cuban people, where the final declaration and proclamation for world peace will be made public.
