Guantanamo.- An introductory course is being carried out at the Guantánamo University of Medical Sciences (UCMGT, in Spanish abbreviation) for nearly 1,200 new students. The course aims to familiarize students with the main teaching processes and develop the educational project for the Brigades of the University Student Federation (FEU, in Spanish abbreviation).
The program of activities runs until September 5th and includes presentations by the members of the University’s Board of Directors, faculty leaders of the Brigades, the election of a representative for each Brigade, and student tours of the main facilities of the University of Medical Sciences.
According to Odalis Marrero Columbié, Director of Educational Work and University Outreach, they will present the curriculum of the careers and will held debates on the values to be developed by Medical Sciences students. They will also conduct a sociopolitical assessment.
Starting this Wednesday, September 3, student gatherings will be held in the University Theaters and the Aula Magna, where they will learn topics related to the Carlos Juan Finlay Detachment Regulations and its missions for the first year of each program, as well as aspects related to the Doctor Mario Muñoz Monroy avant-garde movement.
New students will also participate in a lecture on the life of the eminent Cuban scientist Carlos Juan Finlay, which will be given by the PhD Yamilé Rodríguez Sotomayor, who is the Rector of the University.
Other topics covered in the introductory course include an overview of the FEU’s work, its structure and operation, the Amateur Artists Movement, Sports, the Frank País García Student Assistants, Student Scientific Activities, Award and Proficiency Exams, Knowledge Contests, and the requirements for obtaining the Gold Degree.
New students will also learn about the functioning of the Honorary and Multidisciplinary Chairs, the Comprehensive Career Process, as well as the steps to request a change of major, the student stipend, and hiring.
The closing event of the introductory course will be this Friday, September 5th, at 11:00 a.m., on the platform of the Guantánamo University of Medical Sciences, where the student leaders of the brigades will be introduced.
