Around 3,000 pregnant women and children up to three months old from Guantánamo received specialized care in the previous year at the Provincial Genetics Center, an entity that will celebrate its 18th anniversary next February.

Dr. Ana Irsi Tisset Tamayo, head of the department, said that it is important to early diagnose congenital malformations incompatible with life, work that is complemented by medical offices and polyclinics, through genetic counselors, which provide the first care before, during and after the pregnancy process.

The master in genetic counseling also said that as part of the national program of that specialty they received a new state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment for early care of congenital defects in pregnant women, available since last December.

One of the purposes of the provincial genetics center is to maintain the infant mortality rate within permissible limits and increase the life expectancy of newborns, a priority of this institution in charge of genetic counseling and preconception studies, among other actions.
