Guantánamo.- In the intricate community of Los Tubos, in the La Tagua district of the Guantanamo municipality of Manuel Tames, lies the Gelacio Calaña De la Hera Elementary School, where five educators are also sowing the seeds of knowledge for future generations. This dedication and effort is recognized this October 15, on the International Day of Rural Women.

Everyday, these rural women teach forty-eight students, in addition to performing household chores as mothers or farmers on their own plots of land, a demonstration of their capacity for empowerment in the social sphere within which their lives unfold, in the heart of the Turquino Program.

In our country, the Rural Women Day is of great importance, especially due to the many opportunities they have since the triumph of the revolution. The women who live in the most remote region of our country no longer only dedicate themselves to housework or agriculture. They can now become doctors, engineers, or graduates in different specialties, such as the art of teaching.
