After cumbersome negotiations and a difficult journey due to the US blockade against Cuba, a shipment of solar panel equipment sent by the Argentine Solidarity Movement, MASCuba, finally arrived on the island.
Alberto Mas, one of the driving forces behind the “We Are With Cuba” campaign, shared the news with great joy with Prensa Latina. The campaign is supported by more than 60 political, academic, social, student, legal, and human rights organizations, which organized numerous fundraising activities amidst the difficult economic conditions currently facing Argentina.
In total, MASCuba was able to send 45 solar energy systems, each with 3kW of power, along with their respective panels, inverters, and batteries. The Ministry of Energy and Mines will be responsible for distribution and installation. The shipment arrived at the port of Mariel on a chartered vessel.
“The freight cost much more because no shipping company wanted to transport the cargo,” he noted.
The “We Are With Cuba” campaign received contributions from across the country, collected through cultural activities, events, and gatherings, which fueled the aid to Cuba, culminating in this shipment.
“We know it’s not much; it will benefit 45 families, or medical clinics, or daycare centers, or other social institutions that will be better off within the very difficult conditions to which the economic war waged by the U.S. government has subjected the Cuban people, who nevertheless endure admirably,” stated Alberto Mas.
“It’s a drop in the ocean, but many drops of water become a downpour. The world is showing solidarity with the island. Cuba doesn’t deserve so much suffering,” he emphasized.
“Solidarity activities in Argentina toward Cuba continue in the coming days with concerts, festive gatherings, political and cultural events, and celebrations commemorating the centennial of the birth of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.
In his honor, murals have been painted in public spaces, talks and debates have been held, and the “We Are With Cuba” campaign by Argentinians will continue. A massive march was also held in downtown Buenos Aires to demand “Down with the blockade.”
