Spain hopes to consolidate with Brazil and in this sense attaches the utmost interest to the visit of its president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, starting tomorrow.

Sources from the Moncloa Palace, in a brieffing with journalists, stressed that Brazil is one of the main countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the arrival of Lula da Silva marks a transcendental moment.

Spain will assume the presidency of the European Union (EU) as of July 1 and hopes to strengthen ties with Latin America and the Caribbean, for which it promoted the initiative to restore the summits between the two blocs.

On July 17 and 18, the EU-Celac summit will be held in Brussels and, among other issues, Madrid wants to consolidate its position as a bridge for increased cooperation and exchange with Latin America and the Caribbean, according to official sources.

In this context, Brazil is very important and with Lula da Silva wants to finalize a Mercosur-EU agreement, something that will favor Spain respecting different positions, both in South America and in Europe.
